What is Allethrin ?

Allethrin is a non-systemic insecticide used in homes and gardens for control of flies and mosquitoes, and in combination with other pesticides to control flying or crawling insects. Another structural form, which is more toxic to insects, is used to control parasites living within animal systems.

Allethrin is available as mosquito coils, mats, oil formulations, and as aerosol spray. It has stomach and respiratory action and paralyzes insects before killing them.

Allethrin is slightly toxic, and short-term dermal exposure to allethrin may cause itching, burning, tingling, numbness, or a feeling of warmth. Exposure to large doses by any route may lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hyperexcitability, incoordination, convulsions, bloody tears, incontinence, muscular paralysis, prostration and coma.

Mosquito coils, liquids and mats containing ingredients like allethrin, d-allethrin, pynamin forte, ETOC, emit fumes that are toxic when inhaled or enter the body through skin or eye absorption.

A recent report by Cornell University in the US has stated that the prolonged use of these materials could cause nausea, anxiety, vomiting, diarrhoea and lead to convulsions.

In particular it would not be advisable for infants, young children and pregnant women to inhale the fumes of these repellents.

The fumes of these insecticide-based mosquito repellents aggravate the conditions of those with asthma and mostly children and elderly people, which results in allergic reactions in patients causing them discomfort. So people with respiratory problems need to avoid use of these repellents.

How effective are pesticides, mosquito coils and mats?

Sprays and foggers are arguably the most expensive, ineffective and environmentally harmful thing to do. They are effective for only 2 to 4 hours, then the mosquitoes are back. Sprays are indiscriminate. They kill every insect: ladybug, butterfly, praying mantis, earthworm - everything! Worst of all, mosquitoes that survive come back stronger than ever. In as little as 6 generations (two months under ideal conditions) mosquitoes can build up immunity to a pesticide. The best way to make pesticides effective is to minimize their use. Make them your last choice, not your first choice.

Smoking coils & mats repel mosquitoes, but you have to stay in the smoky plume to be protected. The smoking coils & mats contain pesticides.
