Will focus on 15 suburbs

Mid Day Mumbai - Friday, August 5, 2005

AGNI (Action for Good Governance and Networking in India), an NGO, with its JAAG (Joint Area Action Group) will provide relief to Mumbaikars affected by the July 26 flooding.

A public meeting is being held at Sacred Heart School Hall, Santacruz (W) on August 7, inviting citizens to lend a hand in the relief efforts. In focus will be 15 badly affected areas in the city.

"We have a political set-up and an administrative structure - what we need to balance the two is citizen power," says Gerson da Cunha, convenor and trustee, AGNI.

He adds, "We are collecting food, household good and money to reach out to over 10,500 distressed families affected by the July 26 floods," days da Cunha. "The effort will involve 150 AGNI volunteers who will work in 20 wards across the city," he explained.

AGNI is planning to engage local citizens in networking with various agencies and reaching out to those in distress. Also on the agenda is the formation of an adhoc commtitee that will ensure that the lessons that emerged from the July 26 floods are learnt.

Areas to be covered by the relief programme include Kalina, Chembur, Mulund, Andheri (East), Khar, Vakola, Dharavi, Bandra, Santacruz, Bhandup, Vikhroli, Ghatkopar and Kurla.
