AGNI PRESENTS CITIZENS CHARTER TO POLITICAL PARTIES
The extent of interest political parties take in issues concerning the city and its residents became obvious on Wednesday evening at a meeting convened by Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI). The meeting had been organized to present a charter of demands by Mumbai's citizens to representatives of major political parties and elicit their views on the same.
Only the Congress sent its spokesperson, Ajit Sawant, while the chairs reserved for Atul Bhatkalkar (Bharatiya Janata Party), Pramod Navalkar (Shiv Sena), Vijay Shivtare (NCP) and Milind Jadhav (Bahujan Samaj Party) remained empty as D. M. Sukthankar, Vice Chairman of AGNI and former Municipal Commissioner, read out the Charter. AGNI Chairman and former Union Cabinet Secretary, B. G. Deshmukh presided.
The Mumbai citizens' charter demands that the urban land ceiling be scraped, shanty dwellers be asked to pay a reasonable amount for houses hitherto given free to them under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, Salt-pan lands be used for rehabilitating slum-dwellers and suburban train travel be made more humane.
